Privacy Policy
Easy Solar Last updated: 2 June 2026
The short version
We're Easy Solar. We help New Zealand homeowners work out whether solar and EV gear stacks up for their home — without the sales pressure.
To do that, we need some information from you: your address (so we can look at your roof), a rough idea of how you use power, and a way to get in touch. Here's the plain version of what we do with it:
- We collect what we need to give you a useful, honest assessment — nothing extra for the sake of it.
- If you ask us to, we'll pass your details to solar or EV installers so they can quote you. We only do that when you've asked us to connect you.
- We don't sell your information to advertisers or data brokers.
- You can see what we hold about you, correct it, or ask us to delete it, at any time.
The rest of this page is the detail. If anything's unclear, email us at [email protected] and we'll explain it properly.
1. Who we are
This Privacy Policy explains how Easy Solar Limited ("Easy Solar", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, shares and looks after your personal information. It applies to our website at easysolar.co.nz and the tools and services we provide through it.
We're a New Zealand company (NZBN 9429053333131). We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles.
By using our website and tools, you're agreeing to your information being handled as described here.
2. What information we collect
Information you give us directly
- Contact details — your name, email address, and phone number.
- Your property address — so we can assess your roof and location.
- Information about your home and energy use — for example your power bills or rough usage, how you heat your home and hot water, and whether you have or plan to get an electric vehicle.
- Anything else you tell us — including the content of enquiries or messages you send us.
Information we generate or receive about your property
- When you give us your address, we send it to Google's Solar API to retrieve solar potential data for your property — things like roof size and shape, sun exposure, and estimated generation. See section 4.
- We use that data, along with what you tell us, to calculate your own estimates — potential savings, system sizing, payback, and similar.
Information we collect automatically
- When you use our website, we collect technical and usage data such as your IP address, device and browser type, the pages you view, and the date and time of your visit. We collect this through cookies and analytics tools — see section 7.
You don't have to give us your information, but some of our tools won't work properly (or at all) without it.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Generate your solar and EV assessment and savings estimates.
- Respond to your enquiries and provide support.
- Connect you with solar or EV installers when you ask us to (see section 5).
- Understand how people use our tools so we can improve them.
- Send you updates or our newsletter, if you've opted in (see section 6).
- Meet our legal obligations, and protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
4. Google Solar API and other third-party data
To assess your roof, we use Google's Solar API. This means your property address is sent to Google so it can return solar potential data for that location. Google handles this information under its own privacy terms. You can read how Google handles data at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
We only send what's needed to get the assessment — we don't send Google your contact details for this purpose.
5. When we share your details with installers
If you ask us to connect you with an installer, we'll pass on the details needed for them to prepare a quote — typically your name, contact details, property address, and the relevant information about your home and energy use.
A few things to be clear about:
- We only do this when you ask us to. Using our assessment tools doesn't put you on a list or send your details anywhere.
- Once an installer has your details, their own privacy policy applies to how they use them. We're not responsible for what a third party does with your information after we've connected you, so it's worth reading their policy before you share more.
- We may share your details with more than one installer so you can compare, but only to the extent you've asked us to.
6. Other sharing, and what we don't do
We also share information in these limited situations:
- Service providers — businesses that help us run Easy Solar, such as our website host, email and newsletter platform, and analytics providers (including Google). They're only allowed to use your information to provide their service to us.
- Legal reasons — if we're required to by law, or where it's necessary to protect our rights or someone's safety.
We don't sell your personal information to advertisers or data brokers.
7. Cookies and analytics
We use cookies — small files stored on your device — for two purposes:
- Essential cookies that make the website work and remember what you've entered.
- Analytics cookies, through Google Analytics, that help us understand how people use the site so we can improve it. This includes data like the pages you visit and how you got here.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, though some parts of the site may not work as well if you do. You can opt out of Google Analytics specifically at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
8. Marketing
If you've opted in, we'll send you occasional updates or our newsletter. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time — either through that link or by emailing us. We'll always keep sending you the messages we need to in order to provide a service you've asked for (for example, your assessment results).
9. Where your information is stored
We store your information using reputable cloud service providers, some of which are based outside New Zealand. Google's Solar API and Google Analytics also process data overseas. Where your information is held or processed outside New Zealand, we take reasonable steps to make sure it's protected by comparable safeguards, as required by the Privacy Act 2020.
10. Keeping your information safe
We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse, and unauthorised access, using accepted security practices.
No system is ever completely secure, and information sent over the internet can never be guaranteed to be fully secure. You send information to us at your own risk, but once we have it, we'll look after it as described here.
11. How long we keep it
We keep your information only for as long as we reasonably need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires. In practice:
- Your saved assessment and the details behind it — kept for 24 months so you can come back to it, then deleted or anonymised.
- Enquiries and support messages — kept for [e.g. 12 months] so we can follow up.
- Analytics data — kept according to our Google Analytics settings.
You can ask us to delete your information sooner (see section 12).
12. Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to:
- Ask what we hold about you and get a copy of it.
- Correct anything that's wrong or out of date.
- Ask us to delete your information, or unsubscribe from our marketing.
To do any of these, email us at [email protected]. We won't charge you to access or correct your information, and we'll respond as soon as we can — within 20 working days at the latest. We may need to confirm your identity first.
If you're not happy with how we've handled your information or a request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner:
- Website: https://www.privacy.org.nz
- Phone: 0800 803 909
We'd genuinely appreciate the chance to put things right first, so please come to us before you go to the Commissioner if you can.
13. Children
Easy Solar is intended for homeowners and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you think a child has given us their information, let us know and we'll remove it.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as our tools or the law change. We'll post any changes on this page and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects you, we'll give you clearer notice. Carrying on using Easy Solar after a change means you accept the updated policy.
